Rubies are mined in Afghanistan, Australia, Cambodia, India, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam, and even in the United States. The most widely known are the desirable rubies that come from Myanmar, formerly known as "Burma".

Almost all the rubies used in jewelry are treated or enhanced by various methods that are accepted and approved in the industry.  Less than 1% off all the rubies used in jewelry have received no type of treatment.

Filling fissures inside of a ruby with a material, such as glass or lead glass makes a remarkable improvement to the transparency of the stone, giving the ruby better beauty, brilliance, and color. Rubies that have been diffused or are glass filled are less expensive than natural rubies or "heat-treated rubies", making it possible to have larger and more beautiful ruby jewelry at a fraction of the cost of an untreated ruby.
