Iolite is mined in India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Norway, and Brazil. The Vikings probably mined theirs from deposits in Norway and Greenland.

  • Iolite is popular with artisans and designers, but not in mass-produced jewelry found in chain stores.
  • The largest iolite ever found was in Wyoming and weighed 24,000 carats, over 10 pounds!
  • Seafaring Scandinavians today known to us as ‘Vikings’ used iolite as a navigational aid the sailors were able to determine the exact location of the sun.
